One of the first questions asked of all patients is “what medications are you taking and please include any recreational substances, such as Alcohol, Cannabis, Cocaine, Heroin, Ecstasy, Mushrooms and/or do they participate in vaping or hanging out and having Houlka”? It is here where many of my patients admit using their substance of choice; and almost all my individual patients, including one partner or both, when doing couples therapy, admit to drinking alcohol and/or smoking weed socially. The other substances are rarely mentioned, but on many occasions, I have had many patients report that drinking alcohol often triggers their use of Cocaine and forces them to forge forward and find their drug dealer.

Overcoming substance abuse is one of the most difficult tasks in life. After so many years of doing anything, it’s very hard to break a habit. I make sure my patients know there is no time limit when it comes to grieving.
